2026 MIAA Boys Tennis Championships: Mystic Valley Breaks Through; Newton North, Westborough, Weston Back on Top
The 2026 MIAA Boys Tennis Championships took to the duPont Courts at MIT on Saturday, June 13.
While one team won the first championship in school history and another ended a lengthy drought, the other two champs were much more familiar.
Newton North High School brought home the school's first Division 1 Boys Tennis championship in 24 years.
Division 1
In a showdown of cross-city rivals, it was Newton North High School that ended a long drought with a historic victory. The No. 4 seed Tigers did just enough to pull out a 3-2 victory over No. 6 seed Newton South High School and grab the program’s first state championship in 24 years.
Alex Fine got the clinching point for the Tigers at No. 3 singles, rallying for a 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 victory.
That capped a sweep of the singles matches for Newton North, as Johnny Wastcoat was a 1-6, 6-3, 6-2 winner in the No. 1 singles match after Collin Hwang rolled toa 6-1, 6-3 win at second singles.
Newton North’s championship was the third in program history, but the first since 2002.
Newton South was playing in the state final for the first since 1999 and looking for its first title since 1997. The Lions took down both doubles matches with Ben Hong and Neal Zota at No. 1 (6-1, 7-6), and Ezra Levy and Akshay Sayana-Sudani at No. 2 (6-1, 6-2).
Westborough High School turned the tide on Duxbury High School in the fourth consecutive Division 2 final between the schools.
Division 2
For the fourth year in a row, it was Westborough High School vs. Duxbury High School for all the marbles. The teams traded championships each of the previous times, which meant it was No. 1 Westborough’s turn to come out on top.
The Rangers swept the doubles matches and also prevailed at Nos. 2 and 3 singles to bring home the 4-1 victory. Westborough had beaten Duxbury for the 2024 title, but fallen in both the 2023 and 2025 final matches.
The doubles teams of Jordan Hlawek and Subash Pallothu at No. 1 (6-2, 6-0), and Matias Rosenzuaig and Arnav Chinthapatla at No. 2 (6-1, 7-5) punctuated the win for the Rangers. Zachary Forjette at No. 2 singles (6-0, 6-4) and Darsh Nayak at No. 3 (6-3, 6-1) added the critical points as Westborough duplicated its 4-1 win over Duxbury from the regular season and clinched the fourth championship in program history.
Willy Pierce scored the lone point for the Dragons at No. 1 singles (6-4, 6-4).
After falling short a year earlier, Weston High School reclaimed its spot with a Division 3 championship.
Division 3
Weston High School has been in every MIAA state championship since 2017 and been on the winning side nearly each time. But after tasting rare defeat in 2025, the No. 1 seed Wildcats moved up a division and brought home gold once again but outlasting rival and No. 2 seed Wayland High School, 3-2.
The Wildcats swept the singles matches, including Winston Starrett’s 6-4, 6-3 victory in the No. 2 match that clinched the championship. Peter Chen took a 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 1 singles, and Jacob Wu did the same with a 6-1, 6-1 sweep at No. 3 singles.
Weston had been in Division 4 each of the first four years of the MIAA statewide era, winning from 2022-2024 before falling short to Bedford a year ago. The championship is the 14th all time for the program, most in MIAA boys tennis history.
Wayland had never lost in nine previous title match appearances, including back-to-back Division 3 titles in 2022 and ’23. Despite winning both doubles matches – Charlie Haddad and Kiyoshi Nimi at No. 1 (6-4, 3-6, 7-5), and Max Zhuang and Arya Nagalla at No. 2 (6-2, 6-2) – the Warriors couldn’t keep their perfect streak going.
The Division 4 Boys Tennis championship was the first for Mystic Valley Regional Charter School in any sport.
Division 4
In a championship match lacking in past experience, chalk one up for the school that had never won a title in any sport.
Wes Cunningham provided the decisive point at second singles as No. 2 seed Mystic Valley Regional Charter School took home its first state championship with a 3-2 victory over No. 1 seed Hamilton-Wenham Regional High School.
Cunningham’s win helped the Eagles sweep the singles matches. Jay Raj rolled to a 6-1, 6-0 win and Ethan Co added his No. 3 singles victory (6-2, 6-0). Mystic Valley avenged a 4-1 loss to Hamilton-Wenham from the regular season.
Hamilton-Wenham, seeking its first championship since winning its only previous appearance in 2009, swept the doubles matches. Patrick Driscoll and William Gregory earned a 6-2, 6-4 win at No. 1 doubles for the Generals, and Gavin Meyer and Kevin Spoon prevailed at No. 2 doubles (6-3, 6-4).
