The Head Varsity Girls Soccer Coach is responsible for leading the high school girls soccer program, overseeing all aspects of coaching, player development, team culture, and competitive performance. The coach fosters both athletic and personal growth, emphasizing sportsmanship, academic success, and life skills. This position collaborates with assistant and JV coaches to ensure consistency and alignment throughout the program.
Key Responsibilities
Program Leadership & Vision
Develop and implement a comprehensive program philosophy emphasizing skill development, teamwork, leadership, and sportsmanship.
Lead the varsity program while collaborating with assistant and JV coaches to maintain consistency in training, terminology, and expectations.
Promote the growth of the program within the school and local community.
Represent the program in a professional manner to parents, students, staff, and the community.
Coaching & Player Development
Teach technical and tactical soccer skills, including passing, shooting, dribbling, defending, goalkeeping, and positional awareness.
Develop strategic plans for games, practices, and individual player progression.
Conduct structured practices focusing on skill development, conditioning, team tactics, and mental preparation.
Provide individualized feedback to help athletes improve performance and confidence.
Game Management
Manage all aspects of varsity competitions, including lineups, substitutions, in-game adjustments, and post-game evaluations.
Scout opponents, prepare game strategies, and adjust tactics as needed during games.
Foster sportsmanship and ethical behavior among all athletes during competition.
Culture, Mentorship & Academic Support
Build a positive, inclusive, and accountable team culture.
Encourage leadership, personal responsibility, and academic excellence among athletes.
Serve as a role model demonstrating integrity, professionalism, and respect for all participants.
Support the social and emotional development of student-athletes.
Program Administration
Oversee tryouts, roster management, and evaluations for varsity players.
Maintain communication with athletes, parents, and school administration regarding schedules, progress, and expectations.
Manage equipment, uniforms, and logistical needs for practices and games.
Collaborate with JV and assistant coaches to ensure consistent coaching and skill progression.
Safety & Compliance
Ensure supervision and safety of all athletes during practices, games, and travel.
Adhere to MIAA, NFHS, and North Middlesex School District policies.
Maintain required certifications including First Aid, CPR, and concussion training.
Emphasize injury prevention, proper warm-up/cool-down routines, and safe playing techniques.
Qualifications
Required
Knowledge of girls soccer fundamentals, tactics, and training methods.
Experience coaching high school or competitive soccer.
Ability to teach, mentor, and motivate student-athletes.
Completion of required coaching certifications and successful background checks.
Preferred
Collegiate playing or coaching experience.
Experience working with multi-level coaching staff and developing JV-to-varsity progression.
Familiarity with modern conditioning and skill development programs.
Experience with diverse student-athlete populations.
Work Environment & Schedule
Practices typically after school; games may include evenings and weekends.
Participation in preseason planning, clinics, and offseason development activities as permitted.
Collaboration with assistant and JV coaches, athletic department staff, and school administration.
