Position Overview
The Head Varsity Boys Lacrosse Coach is responsible for leading all aspects of the high school boys lacrosse program, including player development, program culture, competitive success, and alignment with the mission of education-based athletics. This position requires strong leadership, strategic knowledge of the sport, the ability to teach at a high level, and a commitment to fostering a positive, inclusive, and high-achieving environment for student-athletes.
Key Responsibilities
Program Leadership & Vision
Establish and implement a clear, consistent program philosophy that aligns with the school’s athletic mission.
Provide leadership for all levels of the boys lacrosse program, including JV and assistant coaches.
Develop and execute a long-term player development plan that prepares athletes for success at the high school level and beyond.
Represent the boys lacrosse program within the athletic department, school community, and local youth lacrosse organizations.
Coaching & Player Development
Teach advanced lacrosse skills, team concepts, and position-specific techniques for attack, midfield, defense, and goalkeeping.
Develop game strategies, scouting plans, and film review sessions to support athlete growth and competitive performance.
Deliver structured, high-intensity practices that emphasize fundamentals, decision-making, conditioning, and lacrosse IQ.
Provide clear and constructive feedback to athletes, supporting skill development, confidence, and leadership.
Game Management
Oversee all aspects of varsity competition, including game planning, substitutions, time-out management, in-game adjustments, and post-game evaluations.
Prepare scout reports and devise strategies based on opponent strengths and weaknesses.
Ensure teams warm up, compete, and represent the school in a highly professional and sportsmanlike manner.
Culture, Leadership & Mentorship
Build a positive culture rooted in accountability, effort, teamwork, and respect for the game.
Promote academic excellence, character development, and responsible decision-making.
Foster a team environment that values inclusion, mental well-being, and a growth mindset.
Serve as a role model for student-athletes, reinforcing integrity, resilience, and discipline.
Program Administration
Oversee program logistics, including tryouts, roster decisions, team communication, and scheduling coordination.
Manage inventory, maintenance, and distribution of sticks, helmets, protective gear, and training equipment.
Coordinate with athletic training staff regarding injury prevention, safety protocols, and return-to-play procedures.
Collaborate with assistant and JV coaches to ensure program-wide consistency in terminology, drills, expectations, and culture.
Community Engagement & Program Development
Build strong relationships with youth lacrosse programs and feeder systems to support future participation.
Engage families and supporters through consistent, professional communication.
Support offseason training, clinics, and open field sessions within school and state guidelines.
Advocate for program needs and contribute to the growth of lacrosse within the school and broader community.
Safety, Compliance & Supervision
Provide direct supervision and ensure student-athlete safety before, during, and after practices, games, travel, and team events.
Uphold all school, league, and state athletic association policies, including equipment requirements and rule compliance.
Maintain current certifications (First Aid/CPR, concussion training, NFHS modules, etc.).
Emphasize safe training techniques, heat- and weather-related protocols, and proper contact progression.
Qualifications
Required
Strong knowledge of boys lacrosse fundamentals, advanced strategy, and current best practices.
Ability to teach, motivate, and communicate effectively with high school athletes.
Demonstrated leadership skills and commitment to education-based athletics.
Required certifications and successful completion of a background check.
Preferred
Previous high school, collegiate, or competitive club coaching experience.
Collegiate playing experience or equivalent high-level playing background.
Experience building multi-level lacrosse programs and mentoring coaching staff.
Familiarity with film breakdown, performance analytics, and modern training methods.
Work Environment & Schedule
Practices typically held after school; competitions may require evening and weekend availability.
Offseason planning, meetings, and player development activities as permitted by school and state regulations.
Collaboration with athletic department staff, coaches, and community partners.
