General Description
The Athletic Trainer has the major responsibility to take care of the physical needs of the student athletes (“athletes”), mainly in the area of the care and prevention of athletic injuries. The Athletic Trainer works with coaches to provide ongoing support, as well as to assist the Athletic Director as directed to support the goals and objectives of the Athletic Department at Chelmsford High School.

Job Requirements

Essential Responsibilities

Injury Prevention, Management, and Record-Keeping
•Verify and maintain health and physical forms for all athletes via the online registration portal.
•Recommend conditioning and/or remedial exercise and programs for athletes.
•Provide preventive support such as taping, bandages, treatment, etc.
•Attend all home contests as directed by the Athletic Director and provide any medical attention needed, as applicable.
•Provide after-school training room service for preventative measures and injuries.
•Provide notification to parents, coaches, and nurses (if applicable) regarding athlete injuries and recommend medical evaluation as needed.
•Complete appropriate insurance forms for athletes seen by a physician.
•Act as a liaison between families, athletes, coaches, physicians, and other health care professionals.
•Ensure athletes participate in sporting activities only when physically able and ensure that all physician instructions are followed upon returning from an injury.
•Oversee the “Concussion and Head Injury Policies and Procedures” program, including administering any pre-season testing.
•Ensure Return-to-Play from head injury forms are accurately completed and sent to parents within twenty-four (24) hours following injury.
•Communicate with parents/guardians about athletes who do not have a current physical on file with the athletic department, or whose physical information will become outdated within their season, to obtain current information.
•Communicate with school nurses regarding injuries and provide necessary information.
•Complete accident reports and workers compensation forms for coaches and staff members injured during coaching.
•Maintain appropriate, accurate and timely records of all injuries.

Supervision and Training
•Oversee the development of student trainers to assist with Training Room services.
•Work with Athletic Director to ensure student trainers are providing necessary tasks to assist the athletes and coaches (hydration, maintain cleanliness of training room, sanitizing equipment/treatment stations daily).
•Provide supervision and guidance to student trainers.
•Conduct education and plans for coaches on heat illness prevention, proper care and cleaning of coolers and wound care, return to play from head injuries, and other health policies.
•Conduct first-aid certification course for coaches, as needed.

Scheduling and Other Related Duties
•Work closely with the Athletic Director to develop coverage schedules, Training Room, and upgrade procedures.
•Provide coverage of the Athletic training facility and work with the Athletic Director to ensure any additional coverage needs as necessary. This includes working with the Athletic Director to ensure that appropriate health care personnel are available to provide coverage for the athletic training facility and all Chelmsford High School (“CHS”) athletic events.
•Maintain all supplies and provide the Athletic Director with any proposed supply re-orders as needed.
•Demonstrate a complete understanding of the current Massachusetts Department of Public Health, Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association, and Merrimack Valley Conference rules and regulations regarding health care coverage at sporting events.
•Issue, maintain, and collect first-aid kits and water bottles for all coaches.
•Demonstrate professionalism and foster goodwill and consistently enforce good school sportsmanship.
•Ensure clean-up and return of all equipment to the training room at the end of the sporting event(s).
•Maintain the cleanliness of Athletic Trainer’s golf cart(s), the golf cart area, and the training room.
•Responsible for arranging coverage for weekend events. If the Athletic Trainer cannot cover the event or cannot find a qualified person to cover, they will work with the Athletic Director to find a replacement.
• Other related duties assigned as needed.

Work Schedule
This is a full-time, non-affiliated position. The work year includes two days after the spring tournament, for a minimum of 205 and up to 215 days annually. The daily schedule begins at 1:15 p.m. and ends when the last game and coach check-outs are completed. Weekend coverage is paid per diem. The schedule spans from two days before fall practices begin to two days after spring sports end.

Qualifications

•Prior experience as an Athletic Trainer at the secondary school setting preferred.
•Must be certified by the Board of Certification for the Athletic trainer (“BOC”) and possess state athletic training license for Massachusetts. If not currently licensed, must be license eligible.
•Available to work varied hours, varied days and weekends as schedules routinely change.
•Must accompany teams for events where a mandatory athletic trainer is required.
•Demonstrated skills in developing and managing staff.
•Must display flexibility, reliability, self-discipline, and a willingness to take on new and/or challenging tasks as directed.
•Must be able to maintain confidentiality.
•Must exhibit effective time management and effective problem solving skills.
•Must be able to be Certified to Teach CPR/AED Training or have the ability to be certified to teach CPR/AED Certification Course through Red Cross.
At least 3 year(s) of relevant experience preferred.
Master degree preferred.
