There were more upsets than usual in the early rounds of the 2025 MIAA Spring Volleyball Championships, but in the end the title matches feature four of the state's top programs. The Nos. 1 and 3 seeds navigated their way through the bracket to reach the championship round.

Here is a look at what's ahead:

Division 1

Brookline High School vs. Needham High School
Friday, June 13 … 6:30 p.m.
Xaverian Brothers HS, Westwood

What was the first-ever Final Four of all teams from the same league is now down to two, and the championship histories of the remaining schools are quite different.

Brookline is the No. 1 seed and has been the frontrunner for the majority of the season, but the Warriors program hasn’t been to this stage since 1992, when Brookline won its only previous state championship appearance (3-2 over Braintree … another Bay State Conference foe).

Things are considerably different for the No. 3 seed Rockets, who will be making their fifth straight title match appearance, and eighth since 2015 overall. Needham is 4-3 in previous championships, including winning three straight from 2021-2023 before falling short against Newton North in a five-set thriller a year ago.

Brookline swept both regular-season meetings, posting 3-0 wins on April 10 and May 13.

ROAD TO THE STATE FINAL: Brookline – beat Greater New Bedford (3-0), Newton South (3-0), Acton-Boxborough (3-0), Newton North (3-1) … Needham – beat Woburn (3-1), Lowell (3-0), Taunton (3-1), Natick (3-1)

Division 2

Agawam High School vs. Wayland High School
Thursday, June 12 … 6:30 p.m.
Shrewsbury HS

This is a matchup of the last two Division 2 state champions. Will Wayland defend its 2024 title, or will Agawam get back into the winner’s circle?

No.1 seed Agawam is 2-1 in previous title match appearances, including a sweep of Westfield for the 2023 championship. The Brownies also won in 2013 (3-1 over Milford) and fell short to Newton South the following year, both in Division 1.

No. 3 seed Wayland will be looking to build on last year’s five-set thriller against Westfield after having taken out the Bombers again in Tuesday’s semifinals. The Warriors also fell to Westfield in the 2017 title match.

The teams already met back on March 29, when Agawam prevailed in a 3-2 battle.

ROAD TO THE STATE FINAL: Agawam – beat Springfield International (3-0), Bellingham (3-0), East Longmeadow (3-0), West Springfield (3-2) … Wayland – beat Assabet Valley (3-0), Greater Lowell (3-1), Marlborough (3-1), Westfield (3-1)
