Spring 2025 State Championship Lookahead: Boys and Girls Rugby

Curry College in Milton once again will be the host of the 2025 MIAA Rugby Championships, scheduled for Saturday, June 14. Two boys champions and one girls champion will be crowned, with action scheduled to begin at noon.
Here is a look at what is ahead:
Division 1 Boys
Boston College High School vs. Xaverian Brothers High School
12 p.m.
With only seven Division 1 boys rugby teams in the state, the top four qualified, so each team needed to win only one match to reach the state final.
That set up a rematch of the 2024 championship, won by BC High in a 40-38 thriller. It was BC High’s fourth championship overall and first since 2021. The Eagles also have previous championships from 2018 and 2017.
Last year’s match was Xaverian’s first appearance in a rugby state final. The Hawks will be looking to become just the third school to win a Division 1 state since the MIAA added rugby in 2017. Belmont, which Xaverian beat in the semifinals, is the only other school.
ROAD TO CURRY COLLEGE: BC High – beat Weymouth (68-14) … Xaverian – beat Belmont (38-17).
Division 2 Boys
Hanover High School vs. Brookline High School
4 p.m.
The top two seeds easily navigated their way through the seven-team bracket to reach Championship Saturday.
The championship match will be a bookend for each team’s season after Hanover beat Algonquin, 38-14, in their season opener on April 4.
No. 1 seed Hanover is looking for its first championship since winning in the inaugural MIAA season in 2017. The Hawks have had some recent near misses, falling in title matches to Weymouth in 2024 and 2022, as well as Milton in 2018.
No. 2 seed Algonquin also is in search of its second title after winning in 2021. The Titans fell short against Weymouth in 2023, and also will be looking to avenge a Round of 8 loss to Hanover last spring.
ROAD TO CURRY COLLEGE: Hanover – beat Algonquin (64-5) … Brookline – beat Malden Catholic (59-7), beat Chelmsford (35-26).
Division 1 Girls
Belmont High School vs. Lincoln-Sudbury Regional High School
2 p.m.
Another four-team bracket in which the top two seeds emerged. The question is whether Belmont can continue its dominance and cap another perfect season, or if L-S finally can crack the winner’s circle.
Belmont is the only girls team to raise an MIAA championship trophy, having won each of the six titles since 2017. Included in that was a decisive win over Lincoln-Sudbury in the Final Four a year ago. The Marauders also prevailed in this year’s regular-season matchup, 47-0 on April 17. Belmont has allowed only seven points in seven matches this season.
No. 2 seed Lincoln-Sudbury last appeared in a state final in 2022, dropping a 34-0 decision to Belmont. The Warriors came closest to breaking Belmont’s stranglehold in a 2019 championship thriller before ultimately falling, 27-26, and also dropped a 20-10 decision in 2018.
ROAD TO CURRY COLLEGE: Belmont – beat Brookline (54-0) … Lincoln-Sudbury – beat Weymouth (48-33).
