Samuel Phelps of St. Mary's High School: Student-Athlete of the Month for October 2025
It is with great pride that the MIAA recognizes Samuel Phelps as the MIAA Student of the Month for October 2025. A senior at St. Mary’s of Lynn, Sam embodies the true definition of a student-athlete, balancing a rigorous academic load with high-level varsity athletics and a profound commitment to his community. Sam was nominated by St. Mary’s athletic director Jeffrey Newhall.
Sam’s academic record is a testament to his discipline and intellectual curiosity. He has maintained a position on the Honor Roll consistently since the 6th grade, a streak spanning seven years of academic dedication. An AP Scholar in Grades 11 and 12, Sam was recognized for his performance on multiple college-level Advanced Placement exams. He is also a member St. Mary’s Scholars Program (Grades 9–12), a four-year member of this prestigious cohort, representing the top academic tier of his class. A member of the National Honor Society since the 11th grade, Sam continues to lead by example in scholarship and character. Sam also received the Endicott College Book Award for his academic rigor and leadership potential. Finally, Sam was named St. Mary’s Student of the Month (June 2025), selected by faculty for his outstanding classroom contributions.
A multi-sport athlete, Sam is known as much for his "scholar-athlete" mindset as he is for his physical production on the field and court. As a Varsity Football player, Sam was a four-year contributor and senior captain. As a wide receiver, Sam has been a reliable offensive threat, recording three touchdown receptions during his junior season and finding the end zone several times this season. He is a recipient of the Father John Dillon Day Commitment Award, reflecting his "team-first" mentality.
In Varsity Basketball, Sam is described as a sharpshooting guard who has been part of the program since the 6th grade. In 2025, he was honored with the Scholar-Athlete Award for maintaining the highest standards of academic excellence while competing at the varsity level.
Sam’s heart for service is evident in the sheer breadth of his volunteer work, focusing heavily on mentorship and youth development. Sam serves as the Student Fundraising Coordinator for both St. Mary's and Boston Children’s Hospital, organizing efforts to support pediatric care. Through the St. Mary’s Big Brother Program and his role as a Peer Tutor, Sam provides academic and social guidance to younger students. He gives back to the sports he loves by serving as a Youth Basketball Coach and Youth Football Coach, helping shape the next generation of local athletes. From working as a Camp Counselor at Camp Sunshine in Casco, Maine — a retreat for children with life-threatening illnesses — to volunteering at Elderly Housing and painting facilities for West Lynn Little League, Sam’s impact is felt across all age groups.
In the words of Newhall, "Sam has demonstrated leadership and production in the classroom and on the athletic fields as well as anyone we have had in our school in my 20 years as athletic director. When I think of a well-rounded student-athlete that would be a great candidate for the MIAA Student of the Month, the name Sam Phelps immediately enters my mind."
Samuel Phelps is not just a participant in his school and community; he is a pillar of them. His ability to maintain AP Scholar status while captaining a varsity team and coordinating major fundraising efforts for Boston Children’s Hospital demonstrates a level of maturity and time management that is rare among high school students. He represents the very best of the MIAA’s values: Leadership, Integrity, and Service.
The MIAA congratulates Sam and the entire St. Mary’s of Lynn community.
