Samuel Iovieno of Wahconah Regional High School: Student-Athlete of the Month for May 2026
The Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association (MIAA) is proud to announce Samuel Iovieno, an outstanding senior at Wahconah Regional High School, as the Student-Athlete of the Month for May 2026.
Sam is a truly remarkable individual whose profound impact on his school community, athletic programs, and local region will be felt for years to come. As a member of the Wahconah Class of 2026, Sam has consistently demonstrated what it means to lead with heart, excel through hard work, and lift up those around him.
Throughout his time at Wahconah Regional High School, Sam has approached his education with an admirable work ethic and an infectious enthusiasm. Thriving in both his core classes and life skills curriculum, he has proven himself to be an active, deeply engaged participant in his education. In English class, Sam’s writing stands out as particularly meaningful and heartfelt, showcasing a young man who is not afraid to express himself and connect deeply with his coursework. His determination to succeed in all of his classes has earned him the immense respect of his teachers and peers alike.
Sam is widely recognized as one of the premier athletes at Wahconah Regional High School, serving as a vital cornerstone of the school’s powerhouse Unified Track Program. As a team captain this spring, Sam led by example during an extraordinary May 2026 campaign — setting personal records (PRs) in every single one of his events. Sam’s athletic resume is filled with elite achievements:
- State Champion: Captured the individual State Championship in the Javelin in 2025
- Relay Anchor: Served as the reliable anchor leg for the 4 x 100 relay team, leading them to consecutive podium finishes over the last two years.
- Team Success: Helped guide Wahconah to its 5th consecutive Western Massachusetts Sectional Championship this season, a recent 3rd-place finish at the State Championship, and contributed to four consecutive State Runner-Up team titles during his career.
Beyond the medals, Sam’s passion for sports is infectious. He brings a "team-first" attitude to the track every single day, constantly cheering on his teammates and competitors alike, driven by a genuine desire to see everyone happy and successful.
Sam’s leadership and kindness extend far beyond the athletic fields. He is a prominent, familiar face at local events and a passionate advocate for inclusion. Sam is a highly active member of the Best Buddies program at Wahconah, regularly attends community recreation and school athletic events to support his peers, and is a dedicated mainstay at the annual Buddy Walk of the Berkshires. Whether advocating for himself or standing up for others, Sam consistently dedicates his time to building a more inclusive and welcoming community.
As Wahconah Administrator and Coach Jared Shannon said, "Sam is one of the most remarkable people I have met in my life, leaving an indescribable impact on both my personal and professional journey. He is a gifted athlete with a drive, heart, and confidence that have led to pure excellence—truly one of the very best I have ever worked with. He leads with pride, kindness, and an unwavering willingness to help others. May 2026 was his best month yet, capping off a legendary high school career."
As a graduating member of the Class of 2026, Sam leaves a lasting legacy of excellence, pride, and kindness at Wahconah Regional High School. This fall, he will be taking his incredible talents to Bridgewater State University. BSU is incredibly fortunate to welcome a leader of his caliber, and the MIAA is honored to celebrate his achievements.
Congratulations, Sam!
