
MIAA Rugby State Championships: Belmont Girls, BC High Continue To Reign; Hanover Boys Return to Summit
The 2025 MIAA Rugby Championships returned to Curry College in Milton on Saturday, June 14, with two boys and one girls champion crowned.
Here is a look at the action:

Division 1 Boys
Boston College High School withstood a tough defensive battle with archrival Xaverian Brothers High School for a 13-7 victory and a repeat of their 2024 state championship.
The top-seeded Eagles led 13-0 with tries from freshman Cillian O’Callaghan and junior Max Ford, as well as a penalty kick from senior Charlie ThomisoSenior Luke Bell scored a late try for the No. 2 seed Hawks.
The two teams battled it out after averaging nearly 100 points per game combined entering the match.
BC High was a 40-38 winner over Xaverian in the 2024 final, and it was an even closer 36-35 match during the regular season. The championship was the Eagles’ fifth overall.

Division 1 Girls
The dominance continued for Belmont High School, which captured its seventh state championship with a thorough 69-21 victory over Lincoln-Sudbury Regional High School.
Seniors Laila Lusis and Anoush McCarthy each had two tries as the Marauders capped another unbeaten season. Belmont is the only program to win an MIAA Girls Rugby Championship since the sport was first recognized in 2017.
Senior Rebecca Michaud added one try and was 6 of 8 on conversion kicks.
Lincoln-Sudbury’s three tries and 21 points were the most scored on Belmont in three years. Belmont had allowed one try and seven points all season entering the championship.

Division 2 Boys
After winning the first MIAA Rugby Championship in the inaugural season in 2017, Hanover High School finally got back to the top by rolling to a 59-7 win over Brookline High School.
Senior Love’on Flowers sparked the balanced effort with a pair of tries for the Hawks. Seniors Juneau Mofford, Lochlan Garvey, Matthew Bellerby, David Bonilla and Camden Scott all added tries along with sophomore Daniel McAvay. Garvey also was solid on conversions, connecting on 7 of 9 attempts.
Senior Nate Lockwood had all of No. 2 seed Brookline’s points with a try and conversion.
