MIAA Girls Tennis Championships: Wellesley, Longmeadow, Pembroke, Hamilton-Wenham net titles
A program's first state championship, the end of a long title drought, and a three-peat on the courts. The 2024 MIAA Girls Tennis State Championships had a little bit of everything as four teams took home the trophies at MIT's duPont Courts.
Here is a look at the championship matches:
Division 1
Wellesley 4, Boston Latin 1 - The fourth-seeded Raiders swept the singles matches and cruised to the program's second state championship, with the other coming in 2016.
Freshman Bella Gopen (6-2, 6-4) and Kimmy Tai (6-4, 6-2) took the first two singles matches for Wellesley, and junior Sarah Mackey clinched the title at third singles (6-4, 6-1). The Raiders got their other point from the No. 2 doubles team of freshman Mia Chung and sophomore Sari Hart (6-7, 6-0, 10-6)
Freshman Lillian Nguyen and eighth-grader Gisele Ngo secured the lone win for Latin at No. 1 singles (1-6, 6-4, 6-2).
Division 2
Longmeadow 3, Notre Dame Academy 2 - The match came down to a showdown at No. 1 singles, and junior Sarah Tiru rallied from a first set loss for a 3-6, 6-1, 6-4 victory to give the Lancers just their second state championship in 17 overall appearances.
Longmeadow swept the doubles matches behind seniors Lia Manoussoff and Grace Tyler at No. 1 (6-3, 6-3), and senior Marly Ducharme and sophomore Ellen Kennedy at No. 2 (6-1, 6-2). The championship is the first for the school since 1995.
NDA got its victories from eighth-grader Sophia Lirio at No. 2 singles (6-2, 6-2) and sophomore Vivienne LaGrassa at No. 3 singles (7-5, 3-6, 6-4).
Division 3
Pembroke 3, Weston 2 - In another battle that came down to the No. 1 singles match, it was the third-seeded Titans securing the program's first state title as sophomore Nicole Makarewicz pulled out a tight 6-2, 4-6, 6-1 victory.
The Titans swept the singles matches as junior Ruth Dannison at No. 2 and senior Emma Gerlach at No. 3 added wins.
Division 4
Hamilton-Wenham 5, Lynnfield 0 - In a showdown of Cape Ann League rivals, the Generals left no doubt and grabbed their third straight state championship.
The singles wins went to sophomore Emma Jani at No. 1 (6-0, 6-2), junior Naomi Provost at No. 2 (6-0, 6-0), and senior Ellie Holbrook at No. 3 (6-2, 7-6). The No. 2 doubles team of junior Maddie Minich and senior Angelina Meimeteas got the championship clinching point (6-2, 6-1), and No. 1 doubles senior Sienna Gregory and sophomore Emily McIntosh finished the sweep (6-4, 7-5).
