MIAA Boys Lacrosse Championships: Longmeadow wins 3-OT thriller; St. John's Prep, Medfield, Nantucket score titles
A multi-overtime thriller and another one goal game that came down to the wire. Legendary programs adding championships to their rich histories. Dynasties continued, and droughts ended. There were plenty of storylines among the four 2024 MIAA Boys Lacrosse State Championship games.
Here is a look at the action:
Division 1
St. John's Prep 17, Needham 13 - The top-seeded Eagles capped their run through the bracket with a fourth consecutive state championship,
Senior Jake Vana had 5 goals and an assist, and juniors Luke Kelley (5 goals, 2 assists), Cam McCarthy (3 goals, 4 assists) and Drew Bossi (3 goals) all had big games for St. John's Prep.
Seniors Sean Reilly (4 goals, 2 assists) and Jack Curran (2 goals, 2 assists) sparked the Rockets.
Division 2
Longmeadow 11, Marshfield 10 - Senior Brendan Harty scored with 2:05 remaining in the third overtime as the No. 3 seed Lancers pulled out a thriller over the No. 4 Rams at Assabet Valley RVT in Marlborough.
Longmeadow's previous title, against Billerica in 2022, also went two overtimes, and the latest victory was the 21st championship in program history.
Harty finished with 4 goals, including the one that tied the game late in the fourth quarter. Senior Finley Morin added 4 goals in the win. Junior Charlie Carroll had 3 goals and senior John Giberti a pair for Marshfield.
Division 3
Medfield 13, Scituate 4 - The top-seeded Warriors cruised to the ninth championship in program history, but first since 2016 (Division 2), toppling the No. 2 Sailors at Westwood HS.
Senior Tim Collins had 3 goals and an assist and junior Ben Lusby 3 goals to spark the balanced offense for Medfield. Senior Joe Bartolotta added a pair of goals.
Junior Quinn DeCourcey scored twice for Scituate.
Division 4
Nantucket 7, Sandwich 6 - The top-seeded Whalers used strong defense and goaltending down the stretch to clinch the first championship in program history, holding off the No. 3 Blue Knights at Barnstable HS.
Jeremy Jenkinson made 10 saves and Nolen Mosscrop scored twice to carry Nantucket.
Avery Richardson had 2 goals and Shane Corcoran 12 saves for Sandwich.
