MIAA Baseball State Championships: Boston College High, Plymouth North, English High end title droughts; Oakmont, Seekonk repeat winners
WORCESTER - The MIAA Baseball State Championships returned for the second time to Polar Park, home of the Worcester Red Sox, as 2024 champions were crowned in all five divisions. Two schools ended lengthy title droughts, two more repeated after breaking into the winners' circle in 2023, and a fifth school added to an already-rich championship history.
Here is a look at all five championship games:
Division 1
Boston College High 5, St. John's High 1 - Cole Bohane went 3 for 4 with a key two-run single to break the game open, and the top-seeded Eagles avenged a pair of regular-season losses against the Catholic Conference rival and No. 2 seed Pioneers.
It was the first baseball state championship for BC High since 2009, when the Eagle also beat St. John's, and the third in program history.
Sam Keene allowed one run with seven strikeouts over 5 1/3 innings, and Charlie Bushley closed out the victory for BC High. Wyatt Miller scored from second on a wild pitch to provide the winning run.
Division 2
Plymouth North 9, Walpole 2 - Senior D.C. Brown allowed four hits over 6 2/3 innings with 12 strikeouts, and the second-seeded Eagles rolled past the top-seeded Timberwolves to win the third championship in program history.
Will Novak had five of Plymouth North's 14 hits on the day, and Brown and Killian Murphy set the tone with RBI singles in a three-run first inning. Novak had an RBI single in a four-run third inning.
Plymouth North previously won championships in 2008 and 2011.
Division 3
Oakmont Regional 3, St. Mary's 1 - Senior Caleb Allen pitched a complete game three-hitter with 10 strikeouts, and retired the last 14 batters he faced as the top-seeded Spartans repeated as state champions.
Senior Sam Curtis was 3 for 3, scoring the tying run on an Allen single in the fourth inning, and then driving home the final run with an infield single in the fifth inning after Johnny Losordo's go-ahead sacrifice fly.
Josh Doney scattered six hits in his six innings for St. Mary's and had two hits, driving home the lone run with a first-inning single.
Division 4
Seekonk 8, Pittsfield 0 - For the second time in as many years, the Warriors used a dominating pitching performance on the big stage to cap a championship run. This time it was sophomore Javi Borges who allowed three hits over 6 1/3 innings, and his 14 strikeouts were the most in a state final since 2010.
The No. 4 seed Warriors used six straight hits in the first inning to take control early. Junior Tyler Kropis, who pitched Seekonk to the 2023 state title, had a two-run single in the five-run frame. Borges added a two-run single in the fourth.
Division 5
English High 7, Georgetown 1 - The third-seeded Eagles captured not only the first state championship in program history, but also the first baseball title for any Boston City League school since 1971.
Senior David Castillo scattered three hits over six innings and struck out seven after allowing the top-seeded Royals to grab a 1-0 lead in the first. Armanis Romero got the final three outs on the mound and also had an RBI single. Castillo added an RBI on a hit by pitch, and Rusbert Martinez had a key two-out, two-run double in the third inning.
