Girls Wrestling State Championships: It's a First For Putnam Vo-Tech
Putnam Vo-Tech didn’t win any individual weight classes during the 2025 MIAA Girls Wrestling All-State Championships. But when adding up the points from its various places throughout the two-day event, it was enough for the school to bring home its first team championship.
Putnam scored 86.5 points to dethrone 2024 champion Lowell High School and outpace the rest of the field competing on Friday, February 28 and Saturday, March 1 at Methuen High School.
Melanie Miles led the way for Putnam with a third-place finish at 132 pounds. Putnam also got fourths from Izabella Perez (114) and Johnnay Yarns (138), a fifth place from Leanna Watson (235), and sixths from Brianna Santa (100) and Valarie San (165).
Lowell, which finished second as a team with 69 points, was the only school with two individual champions. Amada Moundele captured the 165-pound class with a fall (2:47) over Stella Christopher of Agawam High School, and Amelyiah Martinez later added a victory by fall (0:58) at 235, beating Elaine Pinto of Durfee High School.
Martinez was one of five competitors who repeated championships from 2024.
Samantha Bertini of Ludlow High School became the first three-time girls champion with her win at 107 over Anna Felicio of Saugus/Peabody (technical fall, 4:28).
Adriana Degroat of Framingham High School repeated at 120, toppling Lauren McAteer of Walpole High School (fall, 1:20). After winning at 145 last year, Shelby Galex of Northeast Metro Tech/Bishop Fenwick stepped up to 152 and prevailed over Sofia Vraka of Billerica Memorial High School (fall, 2:44). Then it was Hilary MacDonald of Haverhill High School adding another title at 185, winning an 11-2 major decision over Kaleigh Fuller of Montachusett Tech.
