2026 MIAA Rugby Championships: Familiar Finishes for BC High, Hanover Boys; Belmont Girls
The 2026 MIAA Rugby Championships shifted to Veterans Memorial Stadium in Quincy, home of the New England Free Jacks. But it was a familiar ending for each of the three winners crowned on Thursday, June 11.
Boston College High School rolled past Milton High School for its third consecutive Division 1 Boys Rugby championship.
Division 1 Boys
Boston College High School continued its dominance over the division, winning its third championship in a row and sixth all-time as the top-seeded Eagles rolled to a 48-17 victory over No. 3 seed Milton High School.
Marcus Pinto and Michael Conley had a pair of successful tries apiece for the Eagles, who also beat Milton for the 2021 crown and took down Xaverian Brothers High School each of the past two years.
Pinto’s first try helped give BC High an early 7-0 lead and they cruised from there. Cillian O’Callaghan, Colton Blind, Matt May and Drew VanderMeulen had a try apiece in the victory.
Patrick Collins and Nathaniel Johnson had tries for the Wildcats, who were attempting to win the program’s first championship since back-to-back Division 2 crowns in 2018 and ’19.
Belmont High School outlasted Weymouth High School and extended its run of Division 1 Girls Rugby championships to eight, dating back to 2017.
Division 1 Girls
Speaking of dominance, that is personified by Belmont High School, which has still yet to drop a match in the history of the MIAA girls tournament.
But the top-seeded Marauders were pushed harder than they have been in recent memory before pulling out a 36-24 victory over No. 2 seed Weymouth High School.
Rebecca Christensen had three tries to lead Belmont, which has won all eight MIAA girls’ rugby championships since the sport was first recognized in 2017. But the 12-point margin was the closest for the Marauders since 2019.
Nicole Moraes had a pair of first-half tries for the Wildcats, but Cece Held added a pair of her own to help the Marauders to a 22-12 lead at the break.
Despite two more tries from Delaney Barnhight, Weymouth couldn’t close the gap in the second half in its second title match appearance in three years.
For the second time in as many years, Hanover High School took down Brookline High School for the Division 2 Boys Rugby crown.
Division 2 Boys
The rematch was much closer than when the teams squared off in 2025, but once again it was Hanover High School coming away with the victory. The No. 2 seed Hawks took down No. 4 seed Brookline High School, 26-17, for the program’s third title overall in six attempts.
Jaydon Yoo had a pair of tries, including the opening score to give Hanover a lead it wouldn’t relinquish. A Nolan Ghostlaw try and two conversion kicks from Lucas Almeida put the Hawks ahead 14-0, and Brookline never recovered.
Tyler McDonough also had a try in the win. Brookline got successful tries from B’Call Hooks, Santiago Baron Barros and Jameson Young, but fell short of the program’s first title for the second time in as many years.
