2025 Field Hockey Championships: Walpole, Somerset Berkley, Uxbridge Repeat Winners; Dennis-Yarmouth Back On Top

The 2025 MIAA Field Hockey Tournament began with a total of 137 teams across four divisions, and after playing out over a span of 2½ weeks, four champions stood at the end.

Uxbridge High School continued its recent dynasty in a new division and Walpole High School added another title to its rich legacy. Somerset Berkley Regional High School also was a repeat champion. The only new face in the winners’ circle is Dennis-Yarmouth Regional High School, which took the reins in Division 4.

All four championship games were played Saturday, November 15 at Burlington High School. Two of the four title games pitted the No. 1 vs. No. 2 seeds, another was No. 1 vs. No. 3, and the last featured the Nos. 2 and 5 seeds.

Here is a recap of the championship games, in the order they were played:

Division 1

Top-seeded Walpole found itself in a battle throughout, but still pulled out a 1-0 victory over Franklin, which was the No. 2 seed in the bracket of 33 teams.

It was the third consecutive state championship for Walpole and No. 15 overall, which is second in MIAA history.

Following a scoreless first half, Walpole finally broke through on a penalty corner late in the third quarter. Senior Emily Hagan took the feed from classmate Kendal Cusack and fired home the game’s lone goal.

Walpole’s defense did the rest and finished the tournament allowing just one goal in five games.

Franklin was making its first appearance in a Field Hockey state championship game. Senior Devon Barry made 13 saves for the Panthers.

Division 4

Senior Alania Manuel scored her second goal of the game with 2 minutes, 18 seconds remaining and No. 2 seed Dennis-Yarmouth pulled out a 2-1 victory over No. 5 seed Frontier Regional School to conclude the 34-team bracket.

It was the first state championship for the Dolphins since 2018, when they were in Division 2 in the pre-statewide tournament format.

The game was scoreless into the third quarter when Manuel finally put D-Y on the board. But Frontier responded immediately and tied the game on a goal from senior Ashlie Galenski.

The Red Hawks were playing in their first state final since 2004, and seeking the program’s first championship since going back-to-back in 1975 and ‘76.

Division 2

Somerset Berkley dominated out of halftime, scoring all three goals in the third quarter as the Blue Raiders – the No. 3 seed team in a bracket of 35 teams – eventually rolled to a 3-0 victory over No. 1 seed Hingham High School.

Addie Finlaw scored on a penalty stroke early in the second half to break the ice. Ella Vaught later converted on a penalty corner, and Julie Pacheco pushed the lead to 3-0.

That made it back-to-back Division 2 championships for Somerset Berkley, which improved to 4-0 all-time in state finals. The Blue Raiders previously went back-to-back in Division 1 in 2018-19.

Hingham was making its first appearance in a Field Hockey state championship game.

Division 3

The “drive for five” was a success for Uxbridge. After winning the previous four Division 4 state championships, the No. 1 seed Spartans took on the 35-team Division 3 bracket and capped it with a 3-0 victory over No. 2 seed Sandwich High School.

It was the tightest challenge of the season for Uxbridge, which had outscored its previous four tournament opponents by a combined 33-0.

After a scoreless first quarter, Uxbridge finally broke through against the Blue Knights. Junior Mia Oullette’s goal gave the Spartans a 1-0 halftime lead.

Senior Julianna Casucci added a goal in the third quarter, and junior Aubrey Bouchard tallied late in the game. The run of five straight state titles is second best in MIAA Field Hockey history.

Sandwich, which had a combined 21-0 goal margin in its four tournament wins, fell in the D3 final for the fourth time in five years.
