2025 Fall Swimming and Diving State Championships: Newton North Breaks Through; Wellesley Makes It Six
Wellesley High School continued its dominant run with its sixth consecutive Division 2 Fall Swimming and Diving State Championship on Sunday, November 9 at Boston University.
Meanwhile, one week after winning its first sectional championship in more than a decade, Newton North High School continued the momentum and brought home the program’s first state title.
Division 1
As it did the week before, Newton North set the tone right away with a win in the 200 medley relay and never looked back. The Tigers finished with 349 points to easily outdistance the rest of the field.
The quartet of freshman Ava Zheng and juniors Barabara Liao, Yolanda Yan and Meg Urdaneta got Newton North rolling by taking the 200 medley relay in 1 minute, 50.96 seconds. Sophomore Victoria Sigmunstad Callahan followed up by capturing the 200-yard freestyle (1:57.74).
Liao later added a victory in the 100 breaststroke (1:05.34), and Sigmundstad Callahan swam the anchor on the winning 200 freestyle relay (1:41.26) that included seniors Jillian Schneider and Evin Otero as well as Urdeneta. The Tigers completed the relay sweep in the 400 free relay with Liao, Otero, Schneider and Sigmundstad Callahan (3:37.8).
Brookline High School was second in the team standings (260), followed by Haverhill High School (256), Andover High School (210) and Framingham High School (207).
Vivian Moulson was the meet’s lone double winner as the Andover senior won the 200-yard individual medley (1:59.96) and 100 butterfly (54.11).

Division 2
Wellesley had only one individual event victory, but its scoring depth was just enough to bring home another state championship trophy.
Seniors Sarah Ginsburg (417.50 points) and Hailey Ligibel (363.35) led a 1-2 finish in the 1-meter diving (417.50 points) for the Raiders, who placed second in three other events to finish with a team score of 292. That was just enough to hold off runner-up Chelmsford High School (282), with Belmont High School finishing third (275).
Senior Elaine Cheng was second in the 50 freestyle (25.35), and junior Sonia Tellander added a silver in the 500 freestyle (5:33.83). The Raiders also took second in the 200 freestyle relay (1:44.08) with senior Kate Snow, Cheng, freshman Kathryn Bonnette and Tellander.
