The Varsity Cheerleading Head Coach is responsible for leading and overseeing all aspects of the high school varsity cheerleading program. The coach will foster a positive, disciplined, and student-centered environment that promotes school spirit, sportsmanship, teamwork, athletic development, leadership, and academic success. The coach is expected to uphold the mission and values of the school while serving as a positive role model for student-athletes.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Program Leadership
Organize, supervise, and administer all aspects of the varsity cheerleading program.
Develop and implement practice plans focused on skill development, conditioning, safety, and performance preparation.
Coordinate sidelines, competitions, pep rallies, school events, and postseason activities.
Promote and maintain high standards of sportsmanship, conduct, and teamwork.
Support and help develop sub-varsity and middle school cheer programs when applicable.
Student-Athlete Development
Foster leadership, confidence, accountability, and character development among student-athletes.
Monitor and support student-athlete academic performance and school citizenship.
Establish clear expectations for participation, attendance, conduct, and team culture.
Encourage positive communication and relationships with athletes, families, faculty, and administration.
Safety and Compliance
Ensure compliance with all school, league, conference, state association, and NFHS rules and regulations.
Maintain a safe environment during practices, performances, travel, and competitions.
Instruct and supervise proper technique and stunt progression with an emphasis on athlete safety.
Ensure appropriate supervision of student-athletes at all team functions.
Maintain required certifications including CPR/First Aid and any state or association coaching requirements.
Administrative Responsibilities
Coordinate scheduling, transportation requests, uniforms, equipment, and inventory needs.
Communicate effectively with athletes, parents, athletic department staff, and administration.
Attend athletic department meetings, coaches meetings, and professional development opportunities.
Assist with program promotion, fundraising, and community engagement initiatives as approved by the athletic department.
Submit rosters, eligibility information, and other required paperwork in a timely manner.
Qualifications
Previous head varsity or college competitive cheer experience required.
Strong knowledge of cheerleading techniques, stunting, choreography, and safety standards.
Demonstrated ability to work positively with high school student-athletes.
Strong communication, organizational, and leadership skills.
Ability to build a positive and inclusive team culture.
CPR/First Aid certification required or willingness to obtain prior to season start.
Completion of required state and school coaching certifications/background checks.
Preferred Qualifications
High school, college, or all-star cheerleading experience.
Experience coaching competitive cheer teams.
NFHS or AACCA safety certification required.
Experience with choreography, strength and conditioning, and game/event management.
Work Environment and Expectations
Availability for after-school practices, evening/weekend games, competitions, camps, and summer activities.
Ability to supervise and actively participate in physically demanding activities including spotting and demonstrations when necessary.
Commitment to representing the school and athletic department in a professional manner at all times.
