Varsity Boys Basketball Head Coach – Job Description
Position Overview

Malden Catholic High School seeks a dynamic, mission-driven Varsity Boys Basketball Head Coach to lead and develop a competitive, character-based basketball program. The head coach is responsible for building a culture of excellence that reflects the school’s Xaverian Brothers Sponsored Schools mission, academic priorities, and commitment to developing student-athletes in mind, body, and spirit.

The ideal candidate is a leader, teacher, and mentor who will foster a program rooted in integrity, discipline, teamwork, and sustained competitive success.

Key Responsibilities
Program Leadership & Culture
Establish and maintain a championship-level culture built on accountability, respect, and servant leadership
Promote the mission and values of Malden Catholic in all aspects of the program
Serve as a positive role model for student-athletes, families, and the school community
Build strong relationships with administration, faculty, and the broader Malden Catholic community
Coaching & Player Development
Plan and conduct all practices, training sessions, and game preparation for the varsity program
Develop individual skill development plans for student-athletes
Teach technical, tactical, and mental aspects of basketball at a high school varsity level
Promote strength, conditioning, and year-round athlete development in coordination with school resources
Game & Competitive Management
Manage all game-day operations including strategy, substitutions, scouting, and in-game adjustments
Develop scouting reports and game plans for opponents
Maintain competitive excellence within league and tournament play
Program Oversight
Oversee all levels of the basketball program in collaboration with sub-varsity coaches
Ensure alignment across freshman, JV, and varsity programs
Participate in player selection, tryouts, and roster decisions
Student-Athlete Development
Emphasize academic accountability and character development
Monitor student-athlete academic progress and behavior in collaboration with school staff
Promote leadership development and college readiness for student-athletes
Community & Communication
Communicate effectively with parents, players, athletic department, and school administration
Represent Malden Catholic Basketball in community events, camps, and outreach initiatives
Support and help grow youth basketball pipelines and feeder programs
Qualifications
Prior high school or collegiate varsity head coaching experience preferred
Strong knowledge of basketball systems, skill development, and game strategy
Demonstrated ability to build and sustain a positive team culture
Excellent communication, leadership, and organizational skills
Commitment to academic excellence and student development
CPR/First Aid certification (or ability to obtain)
Ability to work within a Catholic school environment and support its mission
