Summary Description
An Athletic Trainer is an allied health professional recognized by the American Medical Association who
is responsible for the planning, organization, direction, and execution of programs associated with the
prevention and treatment of athletic injuries. An Athletic Trainer is responsible for the health and safety
of Catholic Memorial student-athletes participating in the school’s athletic program at all levels.
Essential Functions
• Responsible for the operation of the school’s athletic training program and monitoring all aspects
of the program including injury prevention, injury evaluation, injury management, injury
treatment and rehabilitation, educational programs, and counseling for student athlete
• Liaise with the School Nurse in the treatment of any athletic injury, or other injury to any student
athlete
• Act under the direct supervision of the School Physician(s) as well as consulting physicians and
other health care professionals as appropriate
• Report all athletic injuries to the school nurse to secure clearance for student athletes to
participate in sports daily
• Maintain accurate and detailed records of all athletic related injuries, and subsequent treatments
• Attend all Catholic Memorial Football home and away games, and hockey, rugby, and wrestling
home game per the MIAA.
Prevention of Injuries
• Evaluate the physical fitness and endurance of the student athletes
• Provide taping, wrapping and padding for student athletes as appropriate/ sport specific.
• Work closely with coaches regarding conditioning programs, techniques, monitoring injuries and follow
up, and ways to create a healthier athletic environment
• Consult with the Head of Athletics and Performance regarding the maintenance of training and free
weight equipment in athletic training room and or field house
• Discuss muscle training exercise and conditioning routines to strengthen and prevent injuries; provide
appropriate preventative solutions and devices for student athletes
• Advise Head of Athletics and Performance and coaches in selection of protective equipment
• Responsible to oversee the fitting of various pieces of athletic equipment including but not limited to
helmets
Evaluation of Injuries
• Initiate and provide appropriate primary acute care, on-site evaluations, emergency care and first aid for
sports-related injuries for Catholic Memorial athletes as well as visiting team athletes if the visiting
athletic trainer is unavailable.
• Arrange for emergency transportation when necessary
• Determine the need for referral to other health care professionals
• In conjunction with the attending physician, determine athletes' ability to return to activity, and continue
play
• Discuss with coaches the status of team members within the bounds of confidentiality
• Prepare and maintain timely written records of all athletic injuries
• Report athletic injuries and the status of athletes to coaches, administrators, and parents pursuant to the
school’s injury/incident reporting protocol.
• Maintain appropriate general treatment orders to be review annually and approve by school physician
• Report visiting team injuries and treatment to visiting school athletic training in a timely fashion,
typically immediately at the conclusion of the athletic contest
Treatment and Rehabilitation of Injuries
• Establish, review and reevaluate acute and chronic rehabilitation programs
• Administer rehabilitation modalities when feasible; refer student athletes to appropriate rehabilitation
centers when necessary
• Maintain contact with primary care and consulting physicians and other health care professionals
involved in athletes’ rehabilitation
• When appropriate, contact parents with injury diagnosis, treatment plan and recommended follow-up care
Administrative
• Provide and/or arrange athletic trainer coverage for Catholic Memorial athletic events and all other
activities as determined by the Director of Athletics
• Propose and manage budget in consultation with the Head of Athletics and Performance
• Order supplies necessary to operate the sports medicine program effectively
• Schedule regular maintenance checks of all athletic training, sports medicine equipment, and supervise,
evaluate and assign training staff
• Supervise and instruct athletic training students from area colleges
• Perform all work in a neat, safe, energy conscious and professional manner
• Manage seasonal registrations/sign-ups for sports and coordinating all Sway Testing/Concussion
Management in coordination with the athletic training staff and Head of Athletics and
Performance at the start of each season. Ie Arbiter Sports
• Report all equipment, system and work site safety concerns to the Head of Athletics and
Performance and Director of Facilities.
• Evaluate and review performance of Athletic Trainers in collaboration with the Head of Athletics
and Performance
• Document all injuries via the Electronic Medical Recorder (EMR) platform. Maintaining confidentiality
and upholding HIPPA and FERPA laws.
Professional Development and Responsibilities
• Maintain appropriate CEU’s and remain in good standing with the National Athletic Trainers Association,
Massachusetts Department of Board Health Professions, and other organizations mutually agreed upon
with the Director of Athletics
Additional Responsibilities
• Required to wear proper attire, consistent with school’s dress code at all times and to maintain
positive attitude and appearance in accordance with department/school standards.
• Must maintain high level of personal hygiene and cleanliness at all times
• All school employees have some responsibility for reporting inappropriate behavior to School
Administration in order to maintain a safe learning environment
• Other duties as needed/assigned by the Head of Athletics and Performance.
• May assist with medical emergencies as needed
Qualifications
• Bachelor’s degree required Master's degree preferred
• Must be NATA certified/ BOC certified
• Current Massachusetts license required
• Current CPR and First Aid Certification required
• Three to five years experience of athletic training and supervisory experience preferably within
an academic setting particularly in secondary schools
• Ability to work evenings, weekends, and late/early morning hours
• Ability to delegate work to, manage, and supervise direct reports
• Possess strong organizational skills, meet deadlines, and anticipate and plan both short- and long
term
• Should possess interpersonal skills with the ability to present information in person, by phone,
and in writing, and respond to questions from students, parents, school employees, and the
general public in an appropriate manner
• Must perform duties with a professional demeanor, which includes relating to others in a
courteous, cooperative, sensitive and congenial manner
• Must be able to work intuitively and independently as well as part of the Athletic team
• Demonstrated leadership skills as well as excellent interpersonal and communication skills in
order to successfully interact with diverse staff, faculty, students and other constituents of the
school
• Should be proficient with computerized word processing, data base management, and injury
management software systems
• Must have the ability to work in a school environment by successfully passing the state mandated
CORI, Criminal Offender Record Information check
• Possess a valid driver’s license
• Positive appearance, attitude and presentation with a strict sense of confidentiality
• Regular and consistent attendance and punctuality is required and a condition of employment

Working Environment
• While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly is exposed to work near moving
mechanical parts
• The employee may be exposed to wet or humid conditions

• The employee may be regularly exposed to high noise environments
• The environment often may be cluttered with equipment
