MIAA Rule 81.7.1   It is a fault for a male player on a mixed gender girls' team to attack the ball at any time inside the 3 meter attack line if at contact, the ball is entirely above the top of the net. [Note: this means that, in the officials' judgement, it doesn't matter where the male player takes off from, it's where the ball is contacted]

A front or back row male player may not attack a ball directed towards the opponents' side of the court while the ball is above the front zone area (within the 3 meter area) AND while it is completely above the height of the net.   The first official should blow the whistle and award the opposing team a point as soon as the ball is contacted within this prohibited area or as soon as the two officials converge and deem that the attack hit was illegal based on this rule.

MIAA Rule 81.7.2 Only female front row players are permitted to participate in a completed block.
[Note: According to the NCAA rules, a completed block is completed when the ball is touched by a blocker or any player involved in a collective block. Only front-row female players are permitted to complete a block.

Collective Block: A collective block is one executed by more than one blocker in close proximity. No male player on a mixed gender team may be involved in a collective block.

[Note: this means that, in the officials' judgement, it doesn't matter where the male player takes off from, it's where the ball is contacted]

This rule differs from the NCAA rule that allows back-row players the opportunity to "take-off" from behind the 3 meter attack line and contact the ball while it is in the front zone as indicated below:

NCAA Rule 14.5.4.1 A back-row player who is in the front zone may not complete an attack-hit if, at contact, the ball is entirely above the top of the net. The contact does not become illegal until the attack-hit is complete [with our rule, the attack-hit need not be completed.]
NCAA Rule 14.5.4.2 A back-row player may complete an attack-hit if:  At take-off, the player's feet have neither touched nor crossed the attack line or its indefinite extension; after the attack-hit, the player may land within the front zone; or At the moment of contact, any part of the ball is below the top of the net [with this rule, the ball can realistically be contacted while it is well within the front zone.]

The MIAA continues to utilize current NCAA Women’s Volleyball Rules in most instances.  We would like to take a moment to highlight new volleyball rules that have been changed or modified recently as a result of the MIAA Rules Change process. The rule numbers and pages referenced are the current Association Rules for Volleyball play and are reflected in the July 1, 2007-June 30, 2009 MIAA Handbook.

Changes from past practice to be aware of are:

Page 77: 81.1.5  The NCAA rule regarding “pursuit” will be permitted, provided the venue had enough room.  Any net system that incorporates wire or chain shall be deemed unsuitable for the pursuit rule, regardless of the amount of free space around them.

Page 77:  81.2  Junior varsity competitions will be two out of three games, played to 25 points utilizing rally scoring, with the third game played to 25 points, and will count toward the season and weekly schedule limit.

The new NCAA attack line extensions will be required court markings as described in the current NCAA Volleyball Rule Book

The extension of the attack lines will be marked outside the court with five 15-centimeter (6 inches) lines spaced 20 centimeters (8 inches) apart to a total length of 1.75 meters (70 inches). Click here for volleyball court diagram.

MIAA member schools have the option to utilize temporary end line tape to mark their volleyball courts in compliance with this rule until such time as their gymnasium floors are scheduled to be painted.
