You Lead (Youth Leading Everywhere Abstaining From Drugs) (5 hours) - You Lead was created to support, connect and develop resources for youth (ages 13-21) who have chosen a lifestyle free of alcohol, tobacco or other drug use. Through the program, the MIAA embraces the role of advocate for the substance-free youth population. For the past six years, the You Lead program has offered conferences for substance-free youth and their advisors at both the middle and high school levels. Each conference is meant to reinforce decision-making skills and to help participants develop a safe, supportive social network. The workshop includes motivational speakers, youth mentors, small group discussions, role-playing and action planning. The objectives make it ideal for existing youth groups that choose to be substancefree, including SADD, peer leaders, and athletes/captains, as well as any individual young person who chooses not to use alcohol, tobacco or other drugs. Smokeless Tobacco (1 hour) This program describes the potentially harmful effects of smokeless tobacco, commonly known as spit tobacco. Addiction due to nicotine, often found in greater quantities than in cigarettes, is a major health concern. Since 1995, the MIAA has offered more than 1,500 smokeless tobacco programs at over 275 schools. Substance Abuse Programs (Length Varies) Topics include healthy vs. unhealthy alcohol use, drugs, anger and aggression, family behaviors, resources, warning signs, and how to say no. The program can be geared toward high school or middle school students. Pre-Season Meetings (30-40 minutes) A guest speaker can highlight your pre-season meeting for athletes, parents, coaches and administrators.
