The Special Role
of Athletics

Sports and athletic activities have a strong impact on our culture. A survey conducted by the National Association of Secondary School Principals reported that 90 percent of high-school aged youth list sports as an important part of life. Studies also show that sports figures, coaches and team captains are very influential role models for youth. Opportunities for positive support have historically been overlooked. Thus, it seems clear that sports activities and athletic leaders could provide an excellent vehicle for reducing the risk of alcohol and drug use.

Society's attitudes in general and the attitudes of people connected with sports in particular can be changed. Education is the key. From policy makers, coaches, trainers, captains, administrators, team leaders and athletes, the MIAA will work with schools to change current attitudes beliefs and behaviors. The social, emotional and spiritual development associated with athletic excellence can be a powerful, positive influence in the prevention of alcohol and other drug use problems. The MIAA has initiated programs in response to the growing need to reduce the magnitude and severity of alcohol and drug use problems among our nation's youth and young adults.
