Pre-Season Meetings
The
philosophy of the pre-season meeting is to involve the family and the school in a
conscientious effort to be partners. Through such involvement, the opportunity for optimal
growth and development of students is enhanced. Pre-season meetings provide a forum for
students and their parents, school activities staff and other adult leaders to openly
discuss a variety of issues, such as sportsmanship, school policy, risk of injury/failure
to warn and healthy lifestyles, including the use of tobacco, alcohol and other drugs.
Although the term "pre-season meeting" has been borrowed from athletics, these
meetings have been found to be so helpful that the idea is now being used for all school
activities in an estimated 50 percent of schools. Pre-season meetings represent an
extraordinary opportunity to foster a dialogue among students, their parents and school
staff --- a dialogue that lays the groundwork for real collaboration towards healthier
youth and stronger communities.
