A message to high school principals about melanoma. Dear Principal,The MIAA Student Services Department urges you to take advantage of a free program that would give your students life-saving information about skin cancer. Currently, more than 170 Massachusetts schools have been trained in the Melanoma Education Foundation's SkinCheck program. At no cost, the foundation will provide a comprehensive on-site training session to high school wellness educators. Each educator will receive a video about skin cancer and a supply of early-detection bookmarks for their students. MEF also provides a detailed lesson plan. In return, schools agree to devote one mandatory classroom session to melanoma and early detection. You may not be aware that melanoma is the most common cancer in young adults of ages 25-29. Among women ages 30-35, it is the leading cancer killer. The U.S. incidence of melanoma now exceeds that of new HIV infections. By high school graduation, most teenagers have suffered enough sun damage to increase their risk for a lifetime.
