ALERT REGARDING OUT-OF-STATE COMPETITION

During the most recent meeting of the MIAA Softball Committee, concern was expressed that some of our schools are planning trips to Florida over the April vacation, and may not have given sufficient thought to contest implications. Descriptions such as "friendly games", "scrimmages", "jamborees", "play-days", etc. give rise to the possibility that schools may be creating violations of weekly and seasonal contest limits. Many of the competitions described during the Softball Committee discussion must be counted toward weekly and seasonal limits prescribed by MIAA rules for each sport. (Note that teams in other sports also have received Association approval to travel out-of-state.)

When the MIAA Board acted on a specific request regarding a softball event in Florida, it did so only with respect to providing a waiver of the mileage limitation in MIAA Blue Book rule 37.4.1 (which limits travel to a maximum of 300 miles).

In addition to rule 37, a review of rules 21 and 22 will provide further helpful guidance to those who are considering such travel this Spring.
