MSSADA/NIAAA Awards
The State Award of Merit (for NIAAA members only)

     The Executive Board, on the recommendation of the District Representatives or any Board member, may recognize one NIAAA member each year as a recipient of the NIAAA State Award of Merit in recognition of meritorious service, exemplary leadership and special contributions to interscholastic athletics at the local and state levels.

     Nominations for this award, including all supporting data, are to be made at the September meeting of the Executive Board. Selections will be made at the October meeting of the Executive Board. A 3 x 5 color portrait of the recipient and completed official nomination form is due by the November meeting of the Executive Board.

The NIAAA Distinguished Service Award (for NIAAA members only)

     The Executive Board, on the recommendation of the District Representatives or any Board member, may recognize one NIAAA member each year as the recipient of the NIAAA Distinguished Service Award in recognition of their length of service, special accomplishments and contributions to athletic administration at the local, state and national levels.

     Nominations for this award, including all supporting data, are to be made at the September meeting of the Executive Board. Selection will be made at the October meeting of the Executive Board and a 3 x 5 color portrait and official nomination form is due by the November meeting of the Executive Board. The recipient of this award will represent our Association at regional and national competitions.

The Athletic Director of the Year Award

     The Executive Board, on the recommendation of the District Representatives, annually selects eight athletic administrators (one from each of the eight MIAA athletic districts) to receive the District Athletic Director of the Year Award. Recipients of the District Athletic Director of the Year Award are selected from persons nominated by their respective district athletic directors associations. This award recognizes athletic administrators from across the state that have excelled in the profession. In addition, the Executive Board, at the recommendation of the Athletic Director of the Year Selection Committee, selects one individual to receive the MSSADA Athletic Director of the Year Award. The recipient of this award will have made significant contributions within the field of athletic administration at the local, state and national levels and will represent our association at regional and national competitions.

     Nominations for the MSSADA Athletic Director of the Year Award along with completed official application forms, biographies, letters of recommendation and professionally done 3x5 color photographs are to be submitted to the Awards Chairman at the September meeting of the Executive Board. The Athletic Director of the Year Selection Committee will meet and review all applications and make their recommendation at the October meeting of the Executive Board.

The President's Award of Merit

     The President, on the recommendation of any Executive Board member, may select a number of athletic administrators (not to exceed six) to receive the President's Award of Merit. Recipients of this award will be recognized for their length of service, special accomplishments and contributions to high school athletics at the local and state levels.

     Nominations will be presented at the September meeting of the Executive Board along with all supporting material. Photographs (3 x 5 color portrait) are due by the November meeting of the Executive Board.

The Ted Damko Award

     The Executive Board, on the recommendation of the District Representatives, will recognize one individual as recipient of the Ted Damko Award. The recipient of this award will be an athletic administrator having five or less years of experience in the field and will have made significant contributions to the school, league, district and State.

     Nominations for this award will be presented at the September meeting of the Executive Board along with all supporting material. The Executive Board will select the recipient of this award at the October meeting. A 3 x 5 color portrait of the recipient is due by the November meeting of the Executive Board.

The Joao Rodrigues Distinguished Service Award

     The Executive Board, on the recommendation of the District Representatives, annually recognizes one individual from each of the eight MIAA athletic districts who has volunteered their services to the schools and communities in their districts. The recipient of this award will not be a paid member of the coaching staff but will have a long standing involvement with the high school activities programs at the local level.

     Nominations for this award and all supporting data are to be presented at the September meeting of the Executive Board. Biographies and photographs (3 x 5 color portrait) are to be submitted to the Awards Chairman by the November meeting of the Executive Board.

The NIAAA Distinguished Service Award (for non NIAAA members

     The Executive Board, on the recommendation of the District Representatives or any Board member, may recognize one individual each year from outside the field of athletic administration as recipient of the NIAAA Distinguished Service Award in recognition of their length of service, special accomplishments and contributions to athletic administration at the local, state and national levels.

     Nominations for this award, including all supporting data, are to be made at the September meeting of the Executive Board. Selection will be made at the October meeting of the Executive Board. A 3 x 5 color portrait and official nomination form is due by the November meeting of the Executive Board. The recipient of this award will represent our Association at regional and national competitions.

     The MSSADA and the NIAAA annually recognize some outstanding athletic administrators in our state. The awards the MSSADA bestows upon individuals include the Athletic Director of the Year Award, the Joao Rodrigues Distinguished Service Award, The President's Award of Merit, and the Ted Damko Award. The NIAAA annually recognizes certain individuals from each state in recognition of their special contributions to interscholastic athletics at the local, state and national levels. These awards are presented at the MSSADA Annual Conference and include the Distinguished Service Awards (one from inside the field of athletic administration and one from outside the field of athletic administration) and the State Award of Merit, the highest achievement award the NIAAA has to offer.

     All completed nomination forms, supplementary biographies, letters of recommendation (if required), and photographs are the responsibility of the respective district representatives and must be submitted to the awards chairman according to the established deadlines. The executive board will approve or vote on all award recipients at their October meeting.

All photographs must be professionally done 3x5 colored Head/Chest Shots.

To make the awards meaningful, the factors which should be considered are:

  • Individual has a long-standing and distinguished record of involvement with high school activities programs at the local and state levels.
  • Individual is recognized as among the best in their profession by their colleagues.
