Board Adopts Future Changes in Out-of-Season Coach Rule Interpretations
The MIAA Board of Directors met on December 5 . Changes in the Board's application of the MIAA out-of-season coaching standard were approved during that meeting.
The "MIAA Position on Out-of-Season Activities" is accessed by clicking on the icon associated with Rule 40 in the electronic version of the MIAA Handbook. It is this document being modified by the Board's vote. Implementation of these changes has been set by the Board for the start of the next season (i.e. March 19, 2007).
Two previously "Not Acceptable" standards originally defined by the Board have been redefined as "Acceptable", and one "Not Acceptable" standard has been eliminated. In the former case, the Board has defined as "Acceptable" the following:
High school coaches (paid or volunteer) of one sport may be involved in out-of-season activity of another sport.
High school coaches may attend out-of-season sport activities of their student athletes, such as summer basketball leages.
Eliminated from the "Not Acceptable", because it was viewed to be in conflict with the aforementioned changes, is:
Coaches may not circumvent the MIAA regulations regarding the out-of-season coach/student athlete contact by directly or indirectly influencing others to organize and lead such activities.
