National Council Adopts Resolution Regarding Performance Enhancing Substances

On January 6, during the Winter National Federation Council Meeting of the fifty-one (including the District of Columbia) State High School Associations, the following Resolution was unanimously adopted:

The Membership of the National Federation of High Schools affirms its long-standing opposition to the non-prescribed use of performance enhancing substances such as anabolic steroids. Such abuse is harmful to the health and safety of student-athletes, and adversely affect competitive balance. Testing programs, when properly planned, funded and implemented, are effective deterrents. They are also, however, expensive. Governmental entities that mandate such programs should provide adequate funding. Whether or not supported by ancillary testing, drug education works. The membership of the NFHS encourages the Nation's high schools to incorporate educational components into meetings with each team's student-athletes and their parents.
