4/29/09

1.                Attendance: Elizabeth McAndrews, Les Murray, Guy Prescott, Peter Lucia, Don Doucette, Bob Krol, Tom Gallagher, Barry Cahill, Bill Adams, Kevin Cyr, Hardy Nalley, Jim Lee, Jared Scarpaci, John Daileanes, Mike Parent, Jon Longley, Carla Scuzzarella, Dave Johnson, Jon Bernard, Dan Thornton, Mary Ryan, Charlie Symonds, Dave Dempsey, Kevin McLaughlin, Ed Harrison, & Mike Nee.

2.                Discussion on fan behavior and Jon L, NA, handed out a form that is up on the MIAA Web-site - The Case for Sportsmanship - that covers expectations and fan guidelines. It was recommended that this be used at all pre-season meetings with athletes and parents. Form can be found in members only under Tournament Information - General (last item) - The Case for Sportsmanship.

3.                Mid-year exams - for 09-10 - Week of 1/18/10 - 1/21/10 - MLK day is 1/18.

4.                Discussion on Middle School Waivers and Co-op's. The following motion accepted: The CAL unanimously supports any and all schools in the CAL wishing to request a waiver of the MIAA for Co-op's between CAL Schools, and for Middle School students to participate on Sub-V & Varsity High School teams in all MIAA sports. Use the forms in the White Book of Forms in members only section of the MIAA web-site, and send the Co-op request to District A (Tim Woods, Chrm. @ Dracut) and the Middle School waiver to Bill Gaine at the MIAA.

5.                Manchester/Essex HS announced that they will be coming into the CAL in Football starting with the 2011 season. Discussion that followed covered how would the 2 divisions be set up, are Wil, NA, & Masco looking to move into another league, and the upcoming proposal from the football committee to realign the entire state for MIAA playoffs.

6.                CAL Rule 15 discussion and concern voiced on inequities of impact depending on sport and when violation happens. All agreed best to keep the rule as is, and if any changes made should be done by the individual school(s) to make penalty greater.

7.                Mike Nee, Assistant Principal from Wilmington, covered discussion on HB 3435, that was e-mailed to all from Eric Tracey, Wilmington Principal. Motion accepted unanimously 14-0 to be in opposition to HB 3435.

8.                Hyland divisions discussed and after much discussion the following motion that was amended accepted: The CAL will be broken up into 3 divisions for the Hyland Award beginning next year (09-10) and will run on a two year cycle. Breakdown will be as follows:

Div. I: Masco, NA, Wil, Trit, & Pent
Div. II: NR, HW, Nbypt, Ames, Ips, & Lynfd
Div. III: Gtwn, M/E, & Rkpt

9.                New Business:
a.        User fee wavier policy - most use the free and reduced lunch as a guideline and request a letter from the student athlete.
b.       E-mail from the NR Track coaches will be discussed at CAL Mtg on 5/5.
c.        AP Testing - 5/4 thru 5/13 - happens every year at this time and if going to be an impact on any events, please make sure to contact opponents in advance.
d.        All CAL Handbook changes from the March Coaches meeting are now updated and all reminded that this is on the MIAA web-site - click  News from the Districts, then District A, then CAL Handbook.
e.        Congratulations to Bob Krol, HW Principal on his upcoming retirement.
